Robust and very high yielding spring feed barley
Yield potential
Doyen is one of the highest yielding and most consistent varieties available in treated and untreated situations. Doyen is a top choice feed variety where Rhynchosporium is a concern.

Doyen has produced consistently high yields across all regions of the UK, ensuring it is a reliable variety to grow, both for grain and straw production.

Disease resistance
Doyen has exceptional disease resistance with a high Rhynchosporium and mildew rating. However a managed fungicide programme is recommended.

Fungicide use
Getting early to mid season agronomy right is crucial to establishing a healthy crop.
- T0 - The T0 spray prevents diseases gaining a foothold in long growing seasons or where disease pressure is high. The use of Unix helps keep Rhynchosporium at bay.
- T1 - Timing is key for protecting the canopy during the plants’ main burst of growth. Kayak + Triazole provides broad spectrum disease control.
- T2 - Managing late season plant health is also vitally important to ensure a healthy harvest. This is the key time to protect grain fill with awns and green leaf areas being the key targets. Strobilurins protect against foliar diseases and Chlorothalonil has demonstrated control of biotic and abiotic spotting.
Core fungicide programme
- T0 - Unix and Tern (should be used where disease pressure is high)
- T1 - Kayak + Triazole
- T2 - Amistar Opti + Triazole
Agronomic information
Doyen is earlier maturing than Optic – 1-3 days earlier in England and up to 5 days in Scotland, therefore harvest management should take account of this.

Doyen possesses all the characteristics of a good feed variety, including high yields, good straw length and excellent resistance to Rhynchosporium. Whilst there are varieties with longer straw available on the HGCA Recommended List 2007, not all produce the same volume of straw and are as reliable. This extra straw volume is coming from Doyens extra bio mass and number of surviving tillers.
Growth habit
- Early Spring: Semi-prostrate
- Tillering ability: Medium
- Maturity: Early to medium
Drilling dates
- Suitability for early drilling: December onwards
- Optimum drilling date: England: January – February, Scotland: February – March
- Suitability for late drilling (April): Acceptable
Recommended sowing rate
Seed rates are dependent on soil conditions, rotation and the time of drilling: the more difficult the environment, the higher the seed rate must be to compensate for potential plant loss. The table below shows the suggested number of seeds per square metre that should be planted under good conditions.
Nitrogen application
When growing high yielding feed spring barley crops, it is important to have a high nutrient supply. As a base guideline apply 10–15% extra than an Optic crop grown for malting. Seed bed applications are not so important for feed varieties and therefore Nitrogen should be a split dose with 50% at GS 11/12 and 50% at GS 21/22.
PGRs
Normally not required, however NFC advises their use on lush crops or very fertile sites. In these cases use low rate Moddus (0.1 – 0.2 l/ha) at GS 29-30 to stabilise tillers and promote root development.
Quality
Doyen is a high yielding feed barley with excellent grain size, which has also performed well in wholecrop situations.
Grain quality
Specific weight: 69.2 kg/hl
Sieving % through: 2.25mm - 2.5%
Sieving % through: 2.5mm - 7.6%
Harvesting priority
Normal harvest priority - Doyen has excellent resistance to ear loss, but it is always advisable to harvest the crop in the best condition as soon as moisture is correct.
